Winch Performance – Where/When You Need It
When we looked at traditional recovery winch mounting options we were struck by one simple fact: Why are we permanently mounting the primary recovery device to the front of the vehicle when in the many recovery scenarios you need to pull yourself back out of the obstacle, rather than continue through or over it? Wouldn’t it make more sense to allow the winch to be mounted, quickly and securely, wherever it is needed to best suit the recovery operation? Mount the winch on the front, the rear, and even the sides of the vehicle depending on recovery scenario.
So we designed the GearMountTM Winch System. This system utilizes our patented GearMount dual hardpoint mounting system, standard equipment on all Pronghorn Modular Front-End Systems (MFES), Modular Rear-End Systems (MRES), and our upcoming Side Rail System (SRS), allowing you to quickly and securely mount your winch where you need it. On a vehicle equipped with a Pronghorn MFES, MRES, and SRS that gives you 360o of winch mounting points. Simply mount the winch to the GearMount hard points, using the quick-install locking clamps, plug in the power cable and begin recovery operations. And when you are finished simply remove the winch and store it in the vehicle. The GearMount system gives you the option to leave the winch in the garage when you know you won’t need it. You can also carry one winch for multiple vehicles if they are equipped with GearMount equipped systems.*
Our GearMount design allows you to install or remove the winch (or any of the other GearMount accessories) in under two minutes. Simply insert the GearMount Winch System into the GearMount hard points and secure the two quick-lock/release mechanisms. Then just plug in the power cable connector and you are ready to use the winch.
The GearMount Winch System comes with a fully enclosed, aluminum winch case and all necessary hardware to mount to your MFES, MRES, or SRS. The Winch Case provides a high- strength structural aluminum frame and enclosure with a no-flex fairlead mount (Hawse or roller) and integrated carrying handles. The winch case enclosure protects your winch cable/line from debris damage, as well as protecting synthetic winch line from UV damage. We offer the GearMount Winch Case in both a High-Protection model (closed top design) and High-Visibility model (exposed top design) providing either maximum protection for your synthetic winch line in ice/snow or salt and road chemical spray environments or excellent spool visibility and access when full protection is not needed. Large view/access ports provide good spool visibility and access for proper re-spooling. We also offer an optional LED case light for illuminating the winch spool during low light operations.
The GearMount winch case accepts most mid-frame size planetary winches up to 12,500 lbs (with removable control box) and accepts most standard Hawse and roller fairleads (Contact us for a list of compatible winches). The Winch Case is can also be converted for use as top mount winch by adding our Top Mount Winch Plate. The GearMount hard points are designed to easily handle winch loads up to 14,500 lbs (Please note, the GearMount Winch Case currently does not fit large-frame size winches with 14,500+ lb capacity).
Laser cut, CNC bent and CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, the GearMount Winch System is designed to provide high-strength, durable performance. All aluminum components are 2-stage powder coated and available in matte black. Fasteners are grade 8.8 and OE-grade triple coated for maximum corrosion protection (1000+ hr salt spray test).
Dual-Mounting Points, High-Strength, Zero-Rattle
The standard receiver hitch winch mount systems can be useful in providing the ability to move the winch from front to rear, but they offer several disadvantages. The first is in strength. With the receiver hitch system you are working with a single mounting point: the receiver hitch. If you are primarily pulling straight ahead or behind the vehicle then you will find they work well. However, when you have side-load recoveries you are placing considerable and possibly dangerous loads into that single mounting point. The GearMount system uses two dedicated mounting hard points, spaced 11” apart, to providing a stronger, more stable mounting system for side-load recoveries. The GearMount hard points are designed to easily handle winch loads up to 14,500 lbs.
In some off-road scenarios it may be preferable to run with the removable winch installed, to avoid having the winch mounting point trapped against an obstacle or buried in sand or mud. Running for extended periods in rough road and off-road conditions with the traditional receiver hitch-based mounting systems installed allows the winch mount to rattle in the receiver hitch, which can quickly damage both the winch mount and the receiver mount, reducing strength. The GearMount System is designed as a zero-free play system where the winch, or any other GearMount accessory, is locked into position allowing no rattle and no damage to the system. In addition, the GearMount Winch System allows you to place the winch into a stowed position (30o angle) for travel to improve approach angles.
There are off-road applications where having a top mount winch permanently installed on the front of the vehicle makes sense, but for most of us we simply do not need or want to carry around that heavy winch. Adding the weight of a recovery winch (75-100 lbs) to the front of your vehicle is going to have a negative effect the overall performance of your vehicle, especially in the area of on and off-road vehicle handling. And if you have not upgraded your suspension to account for the added weight the issue can go from a negative impact to being downright
dangerous. Even with proper suspension set ups the added weight over the front tires causes reduced off-road tire flotation on soft surfaces and poor vehicle handling in higher speed off- road scenarios. This is also a sizable amount of weight that often is simply not needed during most vehicle operations.
* Requires winch electrical connector on each vehicle.

Outfitting your vehicle for off-road and expedition work comes down to selecting the right gear for the specific terrain and task at hand. When we designed the MFES-JK we weren’t just redesigning the traditional front-end system, but also redesigning how people are better able to use their off-road gear. In addition to lightweight and high-strength performance we have added a new level of functionality to off-road equipment in the form of numerous accessories and tools that change the standard front bumper into a full function accessory mounting system for the Jeep JK. We let you choose the accessories and tools you need for your off-road and expedition efforts. In addition to these accessories we also offer a full line of Recovery and Winch Gear options.
Front Skid Plate
For additional underbody protection we designed our dual-plate, all-aluminum, Front Skid Plate. This design uses a 3/16” 6061-T6 aluminum primary skid plate that joins the MFES-JK to the Jeep JK factory impact beam. We then added a secondary 3/16” layer to the design, also 6061-T6 aluminum, to provide additional impact protection and durability.
Aluminum construction ensures lightweight and rust-proof performance and both skid plate components receive a 2-stage matte black powder coating. All fasteners are grade 8.8 and OE-grade triple coated for maximum corrosion protection (1000+ hr salt spray test).
Hi Lift Shackle
The Hi Lift jack is a highly effectively off-road and expedition tool. It can also be highly dangerous as the jack has a bad habit of wanting to slip out from under the vehicle during lifting. Our Hi Lift Shackle removes this danger by providing a secure, no-slip, fully pivoting mounting point for the Hi Lift jack that still allows the jack to align properly to the load without jamming or damaging the bumper. Or the user. The MFES-JK includes dedicated Hi Lift jack cutouts in the bumper structure, but even with these jacking points the jack can become trapped by the bumper structure if the vehicle tips, causing damage to the bumper body and the coating.
The Hi Lift Shackle mounts in two dedicated mounting points on the MFES-JK outer sections (stub and standard width) and can be used in the two GearMount mounting points as well, giving you four mounting point options on the MFES-JK. It will also work with our Modular Rear Bumper System (MRBS) and side rail systems. CNC machined from 7075 T-6 aluminum. Rated at 12,000 lb MBS.
Splash Guards
Our optional Splash Guards for the MFES-JK are designed to reduce water, mud and rocks being thrown forward from your tires onto the MFES-JK outers. The guards fill the gap between the outer section of the MFES-JK and the factory Jeep fenders. They have been tested and designed to provide a maximum balance of performance and protection without adding unneeded material. The Splash Guards are cut from 3/16” 6061-T6 aluminum and are 2-stage powder coated in matte black. Fasteners are grade 8.8 and OE-grade triple coated for maximum corrosion protection (1000+ hr salt spray test).
Traction Cleats
In some off-road and expedition scenarios you may be working in heavy mud (think Camel Trophy) or the challenge may be snow and ice. In either case you can find that climbing up on the front bumper can be a risky maneuver with the chances being fairly good that you either slip off the bumper or find yourself face down on the hood of the vehicle. For our friends in these environments we have designed our Tractions Cleats. Unlike diamond plate or grip tape, which quickly become useless is mud and snow/ice scenarios, the Traction Cleats are aggressive aluminum cleats that bolt on to the upper surface of the MFES providing a secure, non-slip, foothold in the worst conditions. The Traction Cleats attach at 12-14 pre-drilled locations on the upper surface of the MFES-JK. Each cleat is cut from 6061 aluminum and 2-staged powder coated to match the MFES-JK. The Traction Cleat kit comes with 4 Traction Cleats and associated fasteners (triple coated).
GearMount™ Accessory Mounting System
Off-road and expedition vehicles are all about gear and cargo and how to move them safely and easily. Our innovative GearMount accessory mounting system allows you to quickly and securely improve the gear and cargo capacity of your Jeep JK by giving you the ability to transform your MFES into a high-strength, high performance gear and cargo platform. Our system consists of two dedicated mounting hardpoints that allow you to easily attach a variety of off-road and expedition components ranging from cargo racks to winches to work tables. Whatever you need is easily and securely attached to the MFES-JK, as well as our Modular Rear Bumper System.Unlike traditional receiver hitch mounted designs, our patent pending, dual mounting point locking system gives you a stronger and more stable accessory mount that allows you to attach or remove an accessory in under three minutes. Our design also removes all free play from the mounting. All of this innovation translates directly into more load capacity and durability in rough terrain.
Service Applications and Configurations
The GearMount System is designed to provide a quick install/remove, high-strength, mounting solution for the Pronghorn MFES, MRES, and SRS. This system is designed to accommodate most low-mount planetary winches up to 12,500 lbs with removable control box(contact us for a list of compatible winches). Not currently compatible with large-frame size winches. The GearMount Winch System is compatible with all MFES, MRES, and SRS configurations and all GearMount equipped components.
Materials
The GearMount Top Mount Winch Case and Winch Plate are constructed from laser cut, CNC bent 6061-T6 aluminum. This rust-proof, high-strength, lightweight alloy provides excellent strength and performance. In addition, the aluminum construction provides a rust-proof structure, which is critical for long term durability for a component designed to endure frequent impacts and abrasions that will damage and remove protective coatings.
Corrosion and Coatings
Our all aluminum design requires no coating to withstand rust and we could ship them uncoated without issue. However, we provide a 2-stage powder coating to match the MFES, MRES, and SRS. Powder coating will be chipped and scratched in the off-road environment, especially in use with recovery gear. This cosmetic damage can be touched up with paint or left untreated as desired with no effect on the durability or performance of the component.
Fasteners
To ensure high-strength performance we use all grade 8.8 fasteners on the MFES-JK Rotator Shackle Mount. These are treated with a 3-stage OE-grade coating for maximum corrosion protection (1,000+ hr salt spray test certification).
